User Experience (UX) Designer

About the Role

The NYS Digital Service team at the Office of General Services (OGS) seeks a creative professional to serve as User Experience (UX) Designer. The Public Information Specialist 1 (Digital Content) will function as User Experience (UX) Designer to support digital projects across multiple channels including websites, applications, mobile, and email.

The UX Designer will assist with research, design, testing, and analysis to create engaging and informative online interactions for residents, businesses, and visitors. This role will work closely with product leaders, researchers, content producers, data analysts, and developers to bring products to life.

Ideal candidates have a passion for improving the experience people have with the government, and a deep knowledge of various user-research methods and creating UX design deliverables.

The NYS Digital Service is a team of strategists, product managers and technologists working with agencies to streamline and improve the digital experience across New York State. We strive to create a community that works together to provide programs and services to New Yorkers in an efficient and user-friendly way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Create and optimize a variety of digital products and services to ensure they are accessible, efficient, and user-friendly, by creating UX design deliverables (e.g. sketches, user stories, user flows, interactive prototypes, etc.).
  • Apply user research and design expertise to business needs to create interaction flows that lead to task completion and user satisfaction.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of designs through user testing methods, such as planning and conducting usability testing.
  • Break down projects into reasonable plans with clear deliverables, milestones, and deadlines.
  • Employ various user research methods and know when to use each most effectively (e.g. user interviews, usability testing, card sorting, etc.).
  • Employ design thinking strategies and facilitate activities (e.g. journey mapping, value proposition mapping, mission model canvas, etc.).
  • Design efficient and effective user interface elements and content through the use of research insights, design patterns, and plain language.
  • Follow brand standards and design patterns to create visual design assets.

This position can be Albany or New York City based, may require routine evening and weekend work, as well as some travel on occasion between NYC and Albany.


You Bring to NYS Digital Service

The preferred candidate will have an understanding of digital technologies and trends and exhibit superior communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience providing user advocacy and design expertise across all stages of design, from research and discovery, through implementation, QA, and post-launch optimization.
  • Demonstrated track record of delivering high-value products through strong partnership with cross-functional team members.
  • Demonstrated experience using design and prototyping software (UXPin, Invision, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.).
  • Experience disseminating complex government processes and transactions across all digital mediums (web, social, applications) and ensuring online usability and comprehension for topics such as health, procurement, contracting, finance, licensing, or regulations.
  • Familiarity with creating designs using a design system.
  • Proficiency in Google website analytics.
  • Proficiency in WCAG 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 / Section 508 compliance.
  • Familiarity using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, web/UX design, media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND two years of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media;

OR

A master’s degree in graphic design, web/UX design, media, new media, English, communications, journalism, broadcasting, public relations, films, TV productions, or digital marketing AND one year of experience in public or governmental relations, and/or in writing or producing content for various media;

OR

Six years of the experience described above.
