New York State offers temporary and permanent employment opportunities for qualified veterans.
Veterans may be eligible for:
- Veterans hiring programs
- Additional points on passing civil service exams
- Military make-up exams in certain situations
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Veterans Temporary Hiring Program, you must:
- Have served on active duty in the Armed Forces
- Be honorably discharged after September 11, 2001
To be eligible for the Governor’s program to Hire Veterans with Disabilities (55-c Program), you must:
- Have served during a time of war
- Meet one of the following requirements:
- Have received a Purple Heart; or
- Have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10 percent from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs
- A disability certification letter from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may be required

Apply for the Veterans Temporary Hiring Program:
- Create or sign in to your Civil Service account.
- Confirm that you meet the eligibility requirements.
- Complete the required information in the veteran's employment portal.
- Upload:
- Resume
- DD Form 214
- Search and apply for temporary jobs. State agencies may also contact you based on your submission.
Apply for the Governor’s Program to Hire Veterans with Disabilities:
- Complete and mail in the paper eligibility application.
- Provide additional information if requested by staff.
- Receive an eligibility determination letter by mail.
- Create or sign in to your Civil Service account.
- Complete the online profile.
- Upload:
- Resume
- Optional transcript
- Search and apply for temporary jobs. State agencies may also contact you based on your submission.
Complete a Civil Service exam:
- Search for an exam.
- Apply to take the exam.
- Take the exam.
- Receive your score.
