About

Helping NY Students Succeed and Graduate.

In 1984, at the request of her husband, Governor Mario Cuomo, Mrs. Matilda Raffa Cuomo created and implemented The New York State Mentoring Program, the nation’s first statewide unique school based one-to-one mentoring program to prevent school dropout.

Due to the number of failing schools, it was important to encourage our youth to stay in school and graduate for a better future.

Therefore, in 2015 at the State of the State Address, Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced the reinstatement of The New York State Mentoring Program and his mother as Chairperson.

Why Mentor?

Children who succeed despite overwhelming personal, economic and social obstacles do so often because of a caring adult in their lives. Mentoring outcomes include greater participation in school, improved attendance, higher graduation and college admission rates, and better overall performance.

What We Do

The New York State Mentoring Program creates supportive Mentor relationships for students at risk of dropping out of school. This unique program takes place in a school-based setting, one-to-one between the mentor and mentee with a school coordinator present who is selected by the principal. The program provides background checks and training for volunteer mentors and mentees.
