Honoring the Fight for Equal Rights

In the wake of tragedy in Orlando, Governor Cuomo established a commission to create a memorial honoring the fight for equal rights and all victims of hate, intolerance and violence.

On June 26, 2016 Governor Cuomo established the LGBT Memorial Commission under Executive Order No. 158. As New Yorkers and Americans continue to mourn this tragedy, the Commission has been tasked to search for the architects and artists who will design and execute an LGBT memorial honoring all victims of hate, intolerance, violence and New York’s fight for equal rights.

New York is a beacon for justice and is committed to creating a more inclusive society. It is more important than ever that we stand up for the LGBT community and ensure that everyone is treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
