About PII
Building on the successful program developed by AHRC NYC, the statewide Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) advances New York State’s goal of becoming a model employer by creating internship opportunities in State agencies for individuals with disabilities that may lead to long-term employment.
How PII Works
The PII Coordinator works with State agencies to identify internship opportunities and matches qualified candidates with disabilities to those opportunities.
Talented, qualified interns are recruited from:
- SUNY, CUNY, Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York
- Approved service providers and other non-profit organizations
- High school and transition programs supporting youth with disabilities
About the Internships
Types of Internships
Internships can be developed around any meaningful need, project or in demand job. Categories include (but are not limited to):
- Clerical and Administrative
- Data Entry and Analysis
- Finance and Contracts
- IT and Tech Supports
- Policy and Research
- Program Operations
Internship Duration
Depending on the opportunity, interns can be approved to work up to 320 hours over a 3 to 5-month time period.
Eligible Participants
- Interns
Individuals who are at least 18 years old and have an open case with ACCES-VR or New York State Commission for the Blind may be eligible for an inclusive internship. ACCES-VR and NYSCB are the Vocational Rehabilitation agencies in NYS who will support the internship. - New York State Agencies
Any New York State Agency is eligible to host an intern.
Current Internship Opportunities

The University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (UCAWD), under the Office of Workforce Development and Upward Mobility, seeks an EIT Accessibility Support Intern.
Intern Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible for assisting the CIO of UCAWD, as EOC websites move towards compliance with recently enacted state and federal laws pertaining to accessibility. Based upon a recent audit of the EOC websites, the intern will help the centers with implementing the changes. Additional duties may include accessibility review of other pertinent documents.

Under direction of the supervisor, Maintenance Assistants perform semi-skilled activities and tasks typical of a variety of trade specialties such as in the areas of carpentry, mechanical, electrical, motor equipment or painting.
Intern Responsibilities
- Perform routine repetitive semi-skilled maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry and other facility services and equipment.
- Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, trimming and removing trees and shrubs, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, collection/pick-up of trash and other obstructions from the building and surrounding areas.
- Perform general facilities maintenance such as cleaning common areas, offices and restrooms, painting and moving furniture.
- Maintain automotive equipment and other machinery.
- When applicable, the individual will assist with maintenance requirements for the Nonmilitary Use Program.
- Demonstrate reliability and trustworthiness.
- Will complete and attend training as required.
- Periodic travel may be required using various modes of transportation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

The Human Resources office of HESC works diligently to understand the current and future needs of the agency in order to deploy a committed and capable workforce.
Intern Responsibilities
- The intern will carry out the day-to-day clerical and general functions of the Human Resources Unit of HESC. Duties included:
- Assist to maintain the unit’s spreadsheets, locations, and availability.
- Provide general office support Human Resources (HR). Answer HR’s main phone line, greet and guide employees, sort and distribute mail, maintain HR files – electronic and print, adhering to record retention guidelines. Schedule meetings for HR and other staff as needed.
- Prepare recruitment materials and documents for upcoming events.
- Maintain inventory of all supplies related to the office and job fairs and other events.
- Collect and organize resumes and other documents from Indeed and assist with LinkedIn candidate recruitment
- Maintain the Shared HR Calendar.
- Organize and maintain recruitment files.
- Assist with onboarding actives such as creation of Personal History files, printing and organization of onboarding paperwork, orientation activities, etc.
- Send follow up communications both internally and externally.
- Assist with various types of correspondence to agency employees, including updates to MyHESC SharePoint site.
- Assist with managing HR-related mailboxes and incoming mail. Ensure incoming emails are handled and responded to timely. Transfer files and documents as appropriate.
- Assist with monitoring and tracking of mandatory training requirements, schedule in-person training as needed. Prepare training material and track completed training attestations.

- Assist with review and filing of orientation and onboarding documents for new employees
- Review data from Career Mobility Unity (CMU) classes held over the past year and determine if any trends exist (specific departments, salary grades or individuals)

- Conducting research and literature scans on national best practices and equity-informed policies.
- Monitoring federal, state, and local policy updates affecting children, youth, and families.
