About PII
Building on the successful program developed by AHRC NYC, the statewide Partnership for Inclusive Internships (PII) advances New York State’s goal of becoming a model employer by creating internship opportunities in State agencies for individuals with disabilities that may lead to long-term employment.
How PII Works
The PII Coordinator works with State agencies to identify internship opportunities and matches qualified candidates with disabilities to those opportunities.
Talented, qualified interns are recruited from:
- SUNY, CUNY, Commission on Independent Colleges & Universities in New York
- Approved service providers and other non-profit organizations
- High school and transition programs supporting youth with disabilities
About the Internships
Types of Internships
Internships can be developed around any meaningful need, project or in demand job. Categories include (but are not limited to):
- Clerical and Administrative
- Data Entry and Analysis
- Finance and Contracts
- IT and Tech Supports
- Policy and Research
- Program Operations
Internship Duration
Depending on the opportunity, interns can be approved to work up to 320 hours over a 3 to 5-month time period.
Eligible Participants
- Interns
Individuals who are at least 18 years old and have an open case with ACCES-VR or New York State Commission for the Blind may be eligible for an inclusive internship. ACCES-VR and NYSCB are the Vocational Rehabilitation agencies in NYS who will support the internship. - New York State Agencies
Any New York State Agency is eligible to host an intern.

The University Center for Academic and Workforce Development (UCAWD), under the Office of Workforce Development and Upward Mobility, seeks an EIT Accessibility Support Intern.
Intern Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible for assisting the CIO of UCAWD, as EOC websites move towards compliance with recently enacted state and federal laws pertaining to accessibility. Based upon a recent audit of the EOC websites, the intern will help the centers with implementing the changes. Additional duties may include accessibility review of other pertinent documents.

OER serves in a number of capacities related to the State’s Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives and this position will support, and lead where appropriate, OER’s activities in those initiatives. Activities will include:
- Supporting the OER’s diversity and inclusion planning implementation including its 2026-2030 Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan and Agency Model Plan for People with Disabilities.
- Co-leading in planning and implementation efforts of the OER’s Agency Model Plan for People with Disabilities.
- Identify JEDIA trends via quantitative and qualitative data and analyses on international, federal, state and local levels that support continuous improvement efforts.
- Contribute towards memoranda, briefs, reports, presentations, and other work products as requested by the JEDIA Officer, incorporating research and analysis on problems and solutions in JEDIA, OER and other related aspects as applicable.
- Continuous interworking and collaboration with the JEDIA and other OER teams on a on efforts to increase diversity and inclusion and eliminate barriers to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
- Support in the development and implementation of JEDIA efforts for OER and Labor Management Committee (LMC) staff as applicable.
- Support in the development of internal JEDIA initiatives platform for OER and state employees.
- Assist in efforts that support awareness of JEDIA initiatives on the OER website, social media and other platforms.
- Attending regular JEDIA planning, follow up and supervision meetings.

Intern Responsibilities
The intern will support the Systems of Care Policy Director by
- Research and Policy Support
- Conducting research and literature scans on national best practices and equity-informed policies.
- Monitoring federal, state, and local policy updates affecting children, youth, and families.
- Preparing short policy briefs, fact sheets, or talking points.
- Meeting and Workgroup Support
- Assisting in planning and coordinating cross-systems meetings (scheduling, agendas, materials).

- Research and Policy Support

The Workforce Development & Talent Acquisition team at OPWDD seeks to recruit and hire a dedicated workforce in support of people who have developmental disabilities.
Assist with the DSP Certification programs. These duties could include but are not limited to:
- Engage with OPWDD employees via phone call, email or in person meetings to ensure they understand what is required to earn the requisite DSP certification, including emailing link to set up account.
- Assist with the scheduling and monitoring of workshops to assist OPWDD employees who are working to earn “badges” toward certification.
- Organizing and cataloging employee training certificates needed to upload for certification. Following up with employees to confirm they understand and have successfully uploaded information.
- Organizing and gathering information for the SUNY campuses in relation to the Microcredential program.
- Assisting in organizing and gathering information for DSP events.

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) provides personnel services, staff development, labor relations, diversity and access, and employee benefits to staff in various program areas within the Education Department.
Intern Responsibilities:
- Accurately draft a variety of employee-related correspondence, such as letters and emails, in a timely manner.
- Review and process employee performance documentation.
- Monitor the Jira ticketing system for non-employee requests (agency contractors, volunteers, interns etc.) and complete related data entry and administrative tasks, such as logging into Access database and ensuring all required information is thoroughly supplied.
- Print and organize documents to be filed in employee personal history folders.
- Create recruitment folders in Outlook mailboxes and assign permissions, as needed.
