Using leading-edge technology, our Traffic Systems Technicians ensure that traffic signals, communication networks, detection systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems are functioning properly on the roads we travel daily.

Traffic Systems Technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the mechanical and electrical systems relating to traffic signal operation. This requires working outside in active work zones and in aerial lifts above traffic. Technicians work with electrical construction drawings to diagnose and repair traffic signal equipment and use state-of-the-art vehicle detection systems, such as video and radar.
We also offer a trainee program where we teach everything from operating equipment to troubleshooting and installing electrical systems. Training for a Commercial Driver License is also available.
Additional duties include:
- Setting up work zones
- Updating inventory and completing work order systems
- Inventorying state-supplied tools and equipment on work vehicles
- Inspecting contractor-installed equipment
- Supporting the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations
Ingenuity and problem-solving skills are required to enhance or modify existing systems to work with new equipment.
Stand-by and overtime availability are required; candidates will be expected to respond after hours for service and repair callouts.

Minimum Qualifications
To be hired in one of the three positions listed below, candidates must possess at least one of the qualifications specified for that position.
All positions listed require the following:
- Pass a physical medical examination and drug test
- Possess a valid driver license
- Within three months of appointment, obtain a valid NYS Class B CDL permit
- Within 12 months of appointment, obtain and valid NYS Class B CDL license with no air brake restriction
Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in these titles and assignments. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.
Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 1
Qualified candidates must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Thirty (30) college semester credit hours, including at least nine credit hours in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance or electronic technology
- One year of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components
- Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program
- Graduation from a high school technical electricity/electronics education program or a BOCES program issued by a recognized education authority
Traffic Systems Technician Trainee 2
Qualified candidates must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Sixty (60) college semester credit hours, including at least 15 credit hours in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance or electronic technology
- Two years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components
- Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program AND one year of experience as described in point two (2) above
- Graduation from a high school technical electricity/electronics education program or a BOCES program issued by a recognized education authority AND one year of experience as described in point two (2) above
Traffic Systems Technician 1
Qualified candidates must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Three years of experience assisting in the installation, repair, or maintenance of traffic signal equipment and/or intelligent transportation systems; commercial, industrial, or military electronic/electrical integrated system components
- Sixty (60) college semester credit hours, including at least 15 college semester credit hours in electrical engineering, electronic engineering, electrical technology, computer technology, automotive technology, electrical construction and maintenance or electronic technology AND one year of experience as described in point one (1) above
- Military training in an electronics field, including completion of an electronic/electrical school program AND two years of experience as described in point one (1) above
- Graduation from a high school technical electricity/electronics education program or a BOCES program issued by a recognized education authority AND two years of experience as described in point one (1) above
Application
Applications are being accepted continuously on a provisional basis. Individuals hired will be required to take the Traffic Systems Technician Civil Service exam when it is next offered.

Salary
The salary range is $45,289 - $64,693
