Help keep the traveling public safe with NYSDOT!

If you’re a problem solver and love the freedom of working at different sites every day, this job may be for you.

Using leading-edge technology, our Traffic Systems Technicians ensure that traffic signals, communication networks, detection systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems are functioning properly on the roads we travel daily.

Join our field teams in maintaining traffic signals and get hands-on experience in a fast-paced environment. As a Traffic Systems Technician, you’ll have a direct impact on keeping your community safe.

Traffic Systems Technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the mechanical and electrical systems relating to traffic signal operation. This requires working outside in active work zones and in aerial lifts above traffic. Technicians work with electrical construction drawings to diagnose and repair traffic signal equipment and use state-of-the-art vehicle detection systems, such as video and radar.

We also offer a trainee program where we teach everything from operating equipment to troubleshooting and installing electrical systems. Training for a Commercial Driver License is also available.

Additional duties include:

  • Setting up work zones
  • Updating inventory and completing work order systems
  • Inventorying state-supplied tools and equipment on work vehicles
  • Inspecting contractor-installed equipment
  • Supporting the Department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations

Ingenuity and problem-solving skills are required to enhance or modify existing systems to work with new equipment.

Stand-by and overtime availability are required; candidates will be expected to respond after hours for service and repair callouts.

We supply the tools and the vehicle. You supply the expertise!
