NY HELPS Open Positions

Many career opportunities exist at the Department of Transportation, and now thanks to the NY HELPS program, no Civil Service test is required for many positions—making it easier than ever to get hired. Anyone who meets the general qualifications listed can apply for an open position without having to take a corresponding exam. Open positions include office assistants, engineers, administrative positions in budget or human resources, landscape architects, motor vehicle inspectors and motor carrier investigators, environmental specialists and many more.

Real Estate Specialist 1 Trainee
The two most common roles for Real Estate Specialists involve the acquisition of real estate property for transportation purposes and managing or disposing of excess transportation property. On the acquisition side, Real Estate Specialists help advance highway construction projects by preparing and reviewing appraisal reports, negotiating with property owners, and providing relocation assistance. On the property management side, Real Estate Specialists maintain rents, regulate highway sign control, and dispose of property no longer needed for transportation purposes.

Engineering Technicians
Engineering Technicians play a vital role and have many career path options at the Department of Transportation. They typically ensure projects are designed and built correctly, including inspection, testing and measuring. Specific duties vary depending on the engineering discipline they work in, which could focus on highway or bridge design, traffic, geotechnical engineering or construction.

Transportation Analyst
Transportation Analyst is a diverse title used across the agency in planning, design, construction, data services, traffic safety and more. Employees do everything from assisting with planning studies and administering community grant programs to participating in the emergency response program and working in GIS or data. It’s a flexible title with multiple career paths and recruits from a variety of backgrounds, including engineering, policy and public administration, GIS, planning and information science. Employees receive job-specific, hands-on experience and mentoring to ensure success.
