Environmental Specialist and Landscape Architect Positions

Overview

NYSDOT’s Environmental and Landscape staff help ensure decisions on transportation projects are environmentally sound. NYSDOT currently employs approximately 75 Environmental Specialists and 60 Landscape Architects throughout the State with career paths in design, construction, planning, operations, environmental analysis and documentation, guidance development and more.


Environmental Specialist Trainee 1/2

As an Environmental Specialist Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to an Environmental Specialist 1 position. Early advancement to Environmental Specialist 1 is possible if you are performing at the full performance level at the end of 18 months.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Environmental Specialist Trainee 1 position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have:

  • Four years of environmental analysis experience which must include substantial involvement in the preparation and review of environmental impact analyses, requiring knowledge and application of state and federal environmental laws, regulations, methods, procedures, and standards; preparation of technical analyses on environmental impact matters; providing consultation on environmental impact laws, rules, and regulations; or conducting office evaluations and field investigations related to environmental regulatory programs.

To be considered for an Environmental Specialist Trainee 2 position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have:

  • Five years of the above experience

An associate degree may substitute for two years of experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree may substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate may substitute for six years of experience.


Environmental Specialist 1

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Environmental Specialist 1 position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have:

Six years of environmental analysis experience which must include substantial involvement in the preparation and review of environmental impact analyses, requiring knowledge and application of state and federal environmental laws, regulations, methods, procedures, and standards; preparation of technical analyses on environmental impact matters; providing consultation on environmental impact laws, rules, and regulations; or conducting office evaluations and field investigations related to environmental regulatory programs.

An associate degree may substitute for two years of experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree may substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate may substitute for six years of experience.


Landscape Architect Trainee

As a Landscape Architect Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Landscape Architect. Early advancement to the Assistant Landscape Architect is possible if you have obtained proof of passing any two sections of the Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE) and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for a Landscape Architect Trainee position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must possess either:

  • A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture.
  • A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.

Assistant Landscape Architect

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Assistant Landscape Architect position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must possess both:

  • A bachelor’s or higher-level degree in Landscape Architecture and proof of passing any two sections of the LARE.
  • A Landscape Architect’s license from any state or political subdivision of the United States.

Salaries

Environmental Specialist salary ranges:

Trainee 1: $53,764 - $68,630
Trainee 2: $59,944 - $76,359
Specialist 1: $66,951 - $85,138

Landscape Architect salary ranges:

Trainee: $66,951 - $85,138
Assistant: $74,193 - $94,121
