Engineer Trainee

Engineering Traineeship Program

As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to an Assistant Engineer position. To advance to Assistant Engineer, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority.

At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to Assistant Engineer is possible if you have obtained your FE and have successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority’s personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FE. You may receive an increase in salary upon obtaining your FE. Information about this increase will be provided by the appointing authority.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Engineer Trainee position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have either of the below qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology (see complete list of qualifying degrees below).
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience (see qualifying experience below).

Assistant Engineer

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for an Assistant Engineer position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have either of the below qualifications:

  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below.
  • Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Professional Engineer 1

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for a Professional Engineer 1 position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must possess a New York State Professional Engineer’s license and current registration, AND have either of the below qualifications:

  • A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher as listed below.
  • One year of full-time qualifying engineering experience as listed below.

Qualifying Degrees

Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental Design Engineering, Environmental Resources Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering, Forest Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees.


Qualifying Experience

One year of full-time engineering experience in the design and construction of parks, roads, bridges, recreational facilities, water and/or wastewater treatment facilities, OR One year of full-time engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroads, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems.


Engineering Technicians

Overview

Engineering Technicians play a vital role and have many career path options at the Department of Transportation. They typically ensure projects are designed and built correctly, including inspection, testing and measuring. Specific duties vary depending on the engineering discipline they work in, which could focus on highway or bridge design, traffic, geotechnical engineering or construction.

Engineer Technician Trainee

To be considered for an Engineer Technician Trainee position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have one of the below qualifications:

  • One year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of diploma issued by a recognized educational authority.
  • 18 semester credit hours of college course work in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
  • Graduation from a high school technical program (recognized by an accrediting agency as meeting acceptable program practices and standards) in Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, electronics, or electronics technology.

Note: Upon successful completion of the 52-week traineeship, candidates will be automatically advanced to the Senior Engineering Technician position.

Senior Engineering Technician

To be considered for a Senior Engineering Technician position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must have either completed the Engineering Technician Traineeship or meet one of the below qualifications:

  • Two years of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying; AND graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma.
  • An associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.

Substitution: a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics, may substitute for one year of the experience; or 36 semester college credit hours in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture or landscape design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology may substitute for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours equaling one year of experience.

Principal Engineering Technician

To be considered for a Principal Engineering Technician position, on or before the date of filing your application, you must meet one of the below qualifications:

  • Four years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority.
  • An associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology AND two years of experience listed above.
  • A bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.

Senior Engineering Technician: $50,844 - $65,061
Principal Engineering Technician: $59,944 - $76,359

Engineer Trainee: $66,951 - $85,138

Assistant Engineer (Upstate): $81,193 - $94,121
Assistant Engineer (Downstate): Starting at $97,673

Professional Engineer 1 (Upstate): $98,298 - $115,252
Professional Engineer 1 (Downstate): Starting at $118,534

For the purposes of the pay rates, downstate counties are as follows: Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. All other counties are considered upstate.
