Inky Brittany Visits Albany
Brittany Curry (InkyBrittany) is an internationally recognized figure in the disability community who utilizes graphic recording (a form of visual communication) to "help people, organizations, and businesses, think and work more effectively together."
Brittany has engaged with people with disabilities for more than a decade beginning with a role in a Georgia non-profit organization where she focused on advocacy and supporting people with developmental disabilities to "help them discover opportunities to live, work, and make friends outside of the world of disability services." Through this work, she was introduced to the concept of graphic recording which she notes as "a tool that played a major role in liberating people with disabilities from institutions." She now travels the world utilizing her skills and gifts to document - and help facilitate - conversations and connections. Brittany also teaches workshops on the skill of visual communication and remains active in mission-driven disability advocacy work.
We asked Brittany to join us on for Disability Rights & Employment Awareness Month (DREAM) Symposium 2024 "Day 2" for our first annual DREAM Conference where attendees included NY State public sector employees as well as partners from multiple states in the northeastern part of the US, and requested that she graphically record components of the day to highlight some of NY's initiatives and services focused on employing people with disabilities. Brittany's ability to capture some of the content from simple ideas to highly complex processes and legislation - and bring it to life in real-time - was a joy to experience! We are proud to have Brittany's work within the NYS Office of the Chief Disability Officer's informational archive as a way to memorialize some of the work being done together with New Yorkers with disabilities.
