To assist with the implementation and enforcement of Article 129-B of the New York State Education Law. To enhance the safety of college campuses by providing guidance to students and college officials on reporting, investigating and addressing sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence and/or stalking and best practices to prevent them in order to enhance campus security and the well-being of the campus population.
The Office of Campus Safety (OCS) is responsible to work with the Department of Education (the Department) to audit the compliance of New York’s colleges and universities as required under Article 129-B (the law) the Clery Act and Title IX. OCS will monitor and assist the Department’s oversight of the schools’ written rules and policies, as well as its collection of aggregate data from the colleges and universities, to ensure that the provision and posting of information and statistics regarding sexual assaults at colleges and universities complies with the law.
The OCS will work with all New York colleges and universities to coordinate student discipline processes with criminal justice processes and to ensure that student discipline processes enhance the accountability of the college or university to its student population free from conflicts of interest.
The OCS will help promote a safe on-campus environment free from sexual assault. To achieve this, the OCS will work with the colleges, universities and the Department to produce honest campus climate assessments as required under the law. In addition, the OCS will also work with the schools, the New York State Police and other law enforcement, including campus police, to prepare proper threat assessments for each college and university as required under the law.
The OCS will also work with the Department to produce a bi-annual report to the governor and the state legislature regarding the law and its effectiveness.
