The world-famous, mountain village of Lake Placid, nestled in the Adirondacks is part of Essex County, where two Winter Olympics were held. The County offers many seasonal and year-round recreational and cultural activities.

Essex County was also the site of numerous historic and strategic military conflicts in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars, many of which occurred in and around Fort Ticonderoga and the Crown Point State Historic Site.

Education: North Country Community College is located in Essex County.

Land: Essex County is in the northeastern part of New York State, just west of Vermont along the eastern boundary of the State. The eastern boundary of Essex County is Lake Champlain, which serves as the New York – Vermont border. The highest natural point in New York, Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet, is in the Town of Keene. The Ausable River forms a partial northern boundary for the county.
