Census 2020 Complete Count Outreach Grants: Local Government

Overview

Overview

New York State is working to ensure that every New Yorker is counted in the upcoming 2020 Census. As a part of New York’s $60 million outreach effort, $20 million was made available in the FY 2020 State Budget to local governments for census outreach in their communities.

Of that total, $15 million has been allocated to all 62 counties as well as to the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers. The remaining $5 million will be deployed over the coming year to target specific communities where further outreach will be necessary as 2020 Census questionnaire filing results become available. Eligible census outreach grant-funded activities are wide-ranging, from distribution of literature, door-to-door conversations, informational sessions about the census and process, development of outreach materials, special events and more.

The New York Department of State, the New York Department of Labor and Empire State Development —each of whose missions are affected by accurate census information—are responsible for administering the census funding.
