INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE FROM GOVERNOR DAVID A. PATERSON
“Little more than two centuries ago, the men and women who would come to call themselves Americans stood up to a power they no longer recognized and sought anew. Their risk and the battles that ensued were inspired by the simple yet profound belief that people could govern themselves. Today we celebrate a nation built on these ideals of self-governance, freedom and liberty.
“These ideals have also given rise to our spirit of independence, which is set firmly among our national traditions. It has guided our leaders through times of uncertainty; provided courage to our servicemen and women in moments of grave danger; and challenged generations to go farther than their forbearers. Our spirit is a beacon to neighbors beyond our shores. They look to the United States as a place of opportunity and share in the hope that when we choose our own leaders, make our own laws and stand firm against intolerance, we come closer to justice.
“We in New York must embrace this spirit as we work to rebuild our economy and strengthen our State. Despite our differences, this spirit reminds us that we have more cause to unite than to divide.
“On behalf of Michelle and the Paterson family, I wish all New Yorkers, especially those in service of our nation, a safe and happy Fourth of July.”
