GOVERNOR PATERSON APPOINTS JUSTICE SHERI S. ROMAN TO FILL AN APPELLATE COURT VACANCY IN THE SECOND JUDICIAL DEPARTMENT

Governor David A. Paterson announced the appointment of Justice Sheri S. Roman to fill a vacancy in the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department.

“I am proud to nominate such an accomplished and respected jurist to the Appellate Division,” said Governor Paterson. “Justice Roman’s experience and dedication on the bench will be a tremendous addition to the Appellate Division.”

Justice Roman has been a Justice in the Civil and Criminal Term of the Supreme Court of Queens County – a position she has held since 1995 and was re-elected to in 2008. Prior to this role, she served from 1992 to 1995 as an Acting Supreme Court Justice in the Criminal Term of the Supreme Court of Queens County. Justice Roman was appointed as a Criminal Court Judge in 1985 by Mayor Koch, and was reappointed by Mayor Giuliani in 1994. Justice Roman began her legal career with the Bronx County District Attorney's Office in 1972, where she served as Chief of the Litigation Training Bureau, Chief of the Major Offense Bureau, Acting Chief of the Homicide Bureau, and Bureau Chief of the Supreme Court.

Justice Roman graduated cum laude from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1969. She received her law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1972. She also received an L.L.M. in Criminal Justice from New York University School of Law in 1976. She is the immediate past Vice-President of publication for the National Association of Women Judges.

The annual salary for a Justice of the Appellate Division is $144,000. This appointment does not require Senate confirmation.
