GOVERNOR ELIOT SPITZER NOMINATES
THE HONORABLE CARMEN BEAUCHAMP CIPARICK
AS ASSOCIATE JUDGE OF THE COURT OF APPEALS

Governor Eliot Spitzer today nominated Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick to continue her service as an Associate Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals when her current term of office expires on December 31, 2007.

“Judge Ciparick has served with distinction on our highest court for the past fourteen years,” said Governor Spitzer. “She is an experienced and respected jurist who has demonstrated a tremendous commitment to the court and to the people of this state.”

Judge Ciparick said: “I thank Governor Spitzer for the extraordinary opportunity that enables me to continue serving on the New York State Court of Appeals. I am prepared to dedicate myself entirely to the work of the court to achieve the goal of ably and competently delivering quality service to the people of our great state.”

Lieutenant Governor Paterson said: "I commend Governor Spitzer for his decision to nominate Judge Ciparick to our State's highest court. She has pursued justice in accordance with the rule of law in an exemplary manner and is one of New York's finest public servants."

Judge Ciparick has been a judge for almost thirty years. In 1978, she was appointed as a Judge of the New York City Criminal Court. Four years later, she was elected to the New York State Supreme Court, where she heard both criminal and civil cases. In 1993, Governor Mario M. Cuomo nominated Judge Ciparick to serve as an Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals. She was confirmed by the Senate in 1994, and has served on the Court of Appeals since that time.

Before her first appointment to the bench, Judge Ciparick worked for nine years at the Office of Court Administration, serving as an Assistant Counsel, Deputy Executive Officer and Chief Law Assistant. She began her legal career as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society.

Judge Ciparick was born in New York City. She is a graduate of Hunter College and received her law degree from St. John’s University School of Law.

Judge Ciparick’s current term expires December 31, 2007. On October 12, 2007, the Commission on Judicial Nomination nominated five individuals that it found well-qualified for appointment to the office of Associate Judge of the Court of Appeals. By law, the Governor is required to nominate one of those individuals by December 1. The Governor's nomination is subject to the advice and consent of the New York State Senate.
