STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation

Whereas, for more than two centuries, the United States Military Academy at West Point has been an integral part of our nation’s history – an honored institution at which great military leaders and dedicated soldiers have received exemplary education and training; and

Whereas, it was by an act of Congress on March 16, 1802 that this world-renowned Academy was established within the borders of New York State along the banks of the Hudson River and in commemoration of the anniversary of West Point, all New Yorkers join to celebrate this auspicious occasion; and

Whereas, the Academy and its Corps of Cadets have long symbolized excellence and integrity, and those who form the “Long Grey Line” have gone on to earn our eternal respect for their sacrifices made in defense of our country, its founding ideals of freedom and democracy, and our cherished way of life; and

Whereas, the Academy has produced illustrious American leaders and from its ranks have emerged prominent military commanders such as Grant, Lee, Jackson, MacArthur, Bradley and Patton, and their accomplishments and those of other distinguished graduates have changed the course of world events, ensured the freedom of this Nation, and brought peace to countries across the globe; and

Whereas, the United States Military Academy at West Point truly exemplifies the American traditions of patriotism, and its scenic campus belongs to all Americans and the grounds remain a sanctuary and archival haven for our Nation’s proud military history; and

Whereas, I am delighted to welcome cadets and officers from West Point and the Superintendent of the Academy for this annual commemoration originally established fifty-six years ago by the late James T. McNamara, then member of the New York State Assembly and member of the Academy's class of 1939; furthermore, as our nation’s armed forces are today engaged in conflict, all New Yorkers are thankful for the role of the United States Military Academy at West Point in preparing those who defend this nation and democracy worldwide;

Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim Wednesday, April 9, 2008 as West Point Day in the Empire State.
