STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation
Whereas, the Empire State home to many outstanding citizens of Scottish ancestry and proudly joins with them in commemorating a significant milestone in their history as the United States Senate – a legislative body sworn to uphold the laws of our own free Nation – has officially designated April sixth of each year as “National Tartan Day” in honor of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, on April 6, 1320; and
Whereas, “Tartan Day” pays tribute to the heritage of Americans of Scottish descent, many of whom have made outstanding contributions to our Nation and to the world, leaving their mark as pioneers and innovators in numerous areas of endeavor – science, technology, theology, education, medicine, government, economics, architecture, literature, media, and visual and performing arts; and
Whereas, while the people of Scotland have endured great difficulties throughout history in seeking their own freedom, many have served in the armed forces of the United States bravely during various conflicts and loyally in peace, always with self-preserved pride in their Scottish ancestry and customs; and
Whereas, for more than three centuries, Scottish Americans have realized major accomplishments in this country and, from the earliest times in our history, they have provided key leadership in government and public service, earning distinction for their positive impact upon the social, cultural, and economic development of this State and Nation; and
Whereas, the Scottish people share with Americans of all backgrounds many rich customs that are steeped in tradition and ancient folklore, and which serve as the basis of many modern day activities, further bringing their cultural contributions into meaningful perspective; and
Whereas, this wonderful observance serves to remind us of our immigrant ancestors who hail from this beautiful country located in the northern part of the United Kingdom and who generously added to our own Nation’s greatness and success, as all New Yorkers extend appreciation to citizens of Scottish heritage and join with them in celebrating this event which promotes cultural exchange and further strengthens the bonds of friendship that exist between our nations;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim April 6, 2008 as
TARTAN DAY
in the Empire State.
Given under my hand and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this twenty-seventh day of March in the year two thousand eight.
David A. Paterson
Governor
