Proclamation


Whereas, New York State acknowledges medical professionals who are dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of our youngest citizens, including those who work tirelessly to meet the needs of our State’s student population, and therefore we proudly join to recognize May 7, 2008 as “School Nurse Day;” and

Whereas, school nurses improve students’ physical, emotional, and educational well-being, and today they are an integral component of New York State’s school system, addressing student needs in a responsible and professional manner; and

Whereas, school nurses provide health services in preventive care – such as testing vision and hearing levels and screening for scoliosis, along with monitoring required immunizations; moreover, they are responsible for the development and implementation of individualized healthcare plans for children with chronic and terminal conditions; and

Whereas, school nurses work with staff, faculty and administration to mitigate health problems, and they sponsor programs that raise awareness of public health issues and assist students with special needs; and

Whereas, it is fitting to acknowledge these dedicated individuals for their demonstrated commitment to promoting and safeguarding the overall health and well-being of the student population in our schools; and

Whereas, the citizens of the Empire State join with members of the New York State Association of School Nurses as they celebrate School Nurse Day in communities throughout our State, and extend this recognition to the nationwide population of school nurse professionals who observe National School Nurse Day across the United States;

Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim May 7, 2008 as SCHOOL NURSE DAY in the Empire State.
