Proclamation
Whereas, the citizens of the Empire State recognize that good health is a key component of a long, productive and fulfilling life; in that regard, New Yorkers are proud to support observances that raise awareness of the valuable work carried out by professionals in the various areas of medical health care; and
Whereas, clinical laboratories and their dedicated professional staff contribute much to the medical care and well-being of all New Yorkers; professionals who practice in the medical laboratory – including pathologists, medical technologists, clinical laboratory scientists, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, medical laboratory technicians and phlebotomists – are invaluable members of the patient’s health care team; these highly educated and trained health professionals, who perform and evaluate medical laboratory tests to detect, diagnose, monitor treatment and help prevent diseases, save countless lives each day; and
Whereas, April 20-26, 2008 has been declared National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, and laboratories throughout the country will host open houses, tours, lectures and demonstrations to help acquaint the public and other health care professionals with the workings of the medical laboratory and the contributions of medical laboratory staff; and
Whereas, more than 1,000 clinical laboratories and more than 15,000 laboratory professionals are serving the health care needs of New Yorkers with dedication and commitment to excellence; nationwide, more than 280,000 medical laboratory specialists conduct and interpret laboratory tests that help preserve lives, and maintain the overall health and well-being of the public; and
Whereas, it is fitting that all New Yorkers acknowledge and support the exceptional work of medical laboratory professionals, whose efforts on behalf of the public's health are fundamental to all of our lives;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby recognize April 20-26, 2008 as MEDICAL LABORATORY PROFESSIONALS WEEK in the Empire State.
