STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation

Whereas, the people of the Empire State have a longstanding tradition of responding to the challenges faced by the more vulnerable among us – their generosity and humanitarian service truly making a positive difference in the lives of others, whether for a friend, neighbor, or stranger; and

Whereas, in marking the sixteenth anniversary, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service have once again organized this nationwide food drive in order to reduce the number of individuals impacted by hunger and to promote proper nutrition; and

Whereas, a most worthy initiative, “Stamp Out Hunger” replenishes local food banks, food pantries, and homeless shelters with millions of pounds of nonperishable items that are donated by residents – either left near their mailboxes along postal routes or dropped off at their local post office; and

Whereas, communities across the country participate in this annual event, its success is enhanced by the invaluable support of the many outstanding corporate sponsors and local organizations that also graciously give of their time and talents to lend a helping hand; and

Whereas, everyone gathered is here to kick off the 2008 Letter Carrier Food Drive, I am certain that the compassionate kindness of New Yorkers will once again shine through; hopefully, with even greater numbers joining the crusade to eliminate hunger and making this year’s campaign the most successful yet;

Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby recognize May 3-10, 2008 as LETTER CARRIERS’ FOOD DRIVE WEEK in the Empire State.
