EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation
Whereas, New Yorkers value our state’s natural resources and place a high priority on environmental issues, recognizing the need for measures that will protect and preserve the earth for future generations; and
Whereas, a national leader in environmental conservation, our state supports the global effort to ensure a sustainable environment through its programs that protect open space and encourage greener communities; and
Whereas, Earth Day provides a focal point for many New Yorkers as they evaluate their individual efforts to restore and protect our natural environment, while entire communities hold activities that teach and encourage the importance of environmental preservation; and
Whereas, the need for environmental conservation surpasses all geographical boundaries and our citizens fully recognize the importance of preserving the earth’s most valuable and fragile resources, such as the rainforest; and
Whereas, pollution prevention is an environmentally progressive approach that improves air and water quality by targeting the origins, making it the safest and most direct method of protecting the earth’s natural resources; and
Whereas, through energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources, we can substantially reduce the emission levels of harmful pollutants and ensure that the air we breathe is cleaner and healthier; and
Whereas, advancements in environmental protection are achievable through other strategies including closing outdated landfills, improving wastewater treatment and drinking water facilities, restoring degraded wetlands, improving recycling programs, and preserving our valuable open spaces; and
Whereas, environmental protection is the responsibility of people worldwide and Earth Day is an appropriate time to consider our role in preserving our natural heritage and the precious resources that sustain us;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim April 22, 2008 as EARTH DAY in the Empire State.
