Proclamation
Whereas, the children of New York State continue to benefit from the indispensable service of dedicated AAA School Safety Patrol members who protect them from traffic dangers; and
Whereas, AAA clubs in New York created the first School Safety Patrol in 1926 and continue to provide training and information for youth participating in the program; and
Whereas, throughout the past 82 years, School Safety Patrol members have contributed to the Empire State’s excellent record of support for initiatives that safeguard school-age children; and
Whereas, by ensuring the safety of fellow classmates, School Safety Patrol members help avert deaths and prevent injuries among schoolchildren, often risking their own welfare to protect fellow students in dangerous weather conditions; and
Whereas, in 2008, nearly 15,000 young students in over 400 schools across New York State will help shield their classmates by participating in the School Safety Patrol program; and
Whereas, being a School Safety Patrol member builds a sense of responsibility and confidence within students who, as adults, continue to demonstrate the leadership skills they learned as patrol members; and
Whereas, School Safety Patrol members are applauded for their distinguished and conscientious service to their schools and their classmates, and it is appropriate for New Yorkers to join in recognizing those who sponsor and participate in this program for their commitment to others’ safety;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby recognize May 4-10, 2008 as AAA SCHOOL SAFETY PATROL WEEK in the Empire State.
