STATE OF NEW YORK

EXECUTIVE CHAMBER

Proclamation

Whereas, it is established by New York State that every March shall be designated as Women's History Month, and as this year marks the 27th annual observance, we recognize that women of every racial and national background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and

Whereas, the theme, "Women's Art: Women's Vision," honors the remarkable talents and creativity of American women throughout history - those who excelled in various genres of the arts, working in diverse mediums to achieve the full expression of their soul, provide social commentary, illustrate the nature and scope of the human condition, and to offer an interpretation of the mind's eye captured only by the imagination; and

Whereas, today, we hail great women authors, musicians, painters, sculptresses, illustrators, printmakers, actors and filmmakers who fill critical roles in the job sector and touch every sphere of life, as they not only constitute a significant portion of our country's greatest artists, but are acclaimed globally for their influence on uniquely "American" art through their accomplishments as educators and in establishing artistic and cultural institutions in this country; and

Whereas, by honoring such inspiring women, we acknowledge their excellence as role models for future generations and, in this new millennium, women show even greater promise of improving our nation through their dedication and hard work, their wisdom and experience, and their success in many areas; and

Whereas, the women of today have inherited a noble heritage and they continue to influence and shape every aspect of American life from challenging and changing laws, carrying out groundbreaking research in medicine, science, and technology; their ingenuity and resourcefulness have a tremendous impact upon society and encourage others to pursue new courses of progress; and

Whereas, this occasion provides an opportunity to learn more about the significant achievements of women over the centuries and therefore all New Yorkers are encouraged to join in this monthlong observance by celebrating the contributions and influential role of so many women throughout our history;

Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim March 2008 as Women's History Month in the Empire State.

G i v e n under my hand and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this twentieth day of February in the year two thousand eight.

Eliot Spitzer, Governor

Richard Baum, Secretary to the Governor
