Proclamation

Whereas, New Yorkers join in the observance of School Counseling Week and recognize the contributions school counselors make to the educational, social and personal growth of school children throughout our State; and

Whereas, counseling is an important part of the educational process for students which helps them understand the challenges of an increasingly complex world and make wise decisions that will affect their future; and

Whereas, professional school counselors are certified and experienced educators who guide and direct students toward achieving academic success so they can become productive members of society, and encourage them to explore their abilities, strengths, interests and talents in preparation of a future career; and

Whereas, school counselors dedicate their time and expertise to implementing comprehensive school counseling programs and, as part of the total school environment, they work with other teachers to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and strive toward healthy, realistic and optimistic goals; and

Whereas, in helping parents make tough choices that affect children and their healthy development, school counselors offer ways to help parents positively enhance the social, personal and educational growth of our youth; and

Whereas, employed within both public and private schools, school counselors are committed to uniting teachers, parents, administrators and specialized personnel to form counseling programs that are efficient and have productive results; it is fitting that New Yorkers acknowledge and applaud the valuable work carried out by school counselors as they help to improve our schools and communities by ensuring a brighter future for students across this State;

Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim February 4-8, 2008 as School Counseling Week in the Empire State.
