Proclamation
Whereas, the Empire State is fortunate to be home to organizations that promote the ideals and values of volunteerism, and we recognize the positive work of the Junior League of Albany, Inc., which has been an integral part of New York State's Capital region for the past 90 years, throughout which it has exemplified the mission of the greater international organization founded upon a tradition of women dedicated to the ideals of service; and
Whereas, in seeking to improve the quality of life for all people through volunteerism and civic-minded, responsible work, the Junior League of Albany at the same time strives to develop the potential of women and enhance their effectiveness as community leaders through their positive actions as well as their strength of character; and
Whereas, all members of the Junior League of Albany serve in a voluntary capacity and are committed to the many projects and programs established and sponsored by the League since its inception in 1917, and they have adopted women's and children's issues as a focused area of their work; and
Whereas, renowned for its pioneering efforts and contributions to society throughout the decades, the Junior League of Albany is credited with numerous achievements, among the earliest of which were the development of services in domestic violence, children's health, family support and the cultural enrichment of our youth; and
Whereas, the Junior League of Albany has also made an indelible mark in many excellent non-profits and charitable organizations that thrive today and that received initial support and guidance as projects of the League - including the Ronald McDonald House, the Race for the Cure and Gilda's Club; and
Whereas, among the League's most recent initiatives are Kids in Motion and Kids in the Kitchen, which address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity through education on proper nutrition and emphasis on physical activity; and
Whereas, the entire Junior League of Albany is to be commended for its outstanding record of service as the organization continues to uphold the standard of excellence which has become the enduring hallmark of the Junior League, nationwide and internationally, and we join to celebrate its 90th year of wonderful contributions to the people and communities of our great Capital Region;
Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim November 3, 2007 as Junior League Of Albany Day and extend best wishes to all members as they commemorate this observance.
