Proclamation

Whereas, there are currently over three million residents of the Empire State who are 60 years of age and older, and all New Yorkers join in paying tribute to our cherished population of senior citizens who enjoy active and productive lives through which they contribute to many aspects of life in this great State; and

Whereas, the senior community is a wonderful source of knowledge and experience from which we can all learn and improve ourselves, and as beneficiaries of their lifelong work, we are indebted to our respected elders; and

Whereas, today, the aging service network plays a vital role in the delivery of programs designed for residents 60 years of age and older, and the professionals and staff who make these resources available to seniors are recognized for their work; and

Whereas, those who work in the field of gerontology and geriatric services represent a broad spectrum of disciplines and include health professionals, social workers, professional social workers and aging service professionals, advocacy groups, community leaders, administrators in acute and long term care, educators, researchers, government officials, policy makers, and students interested in these areas; and

Whereas, originally founded in 1972 as the New York State Association of Gerontological Education and renamed the Society on Aging of New York in 1989, this organization is built upon the alliance of leadership in the field of aging that continues to improve the quality of life for older New Yorkers through advocacy, education, research and services; and

Whereas, this year, State Society on Aging of New York will hold its 35th Annual Conference, "Addressing the Opportunities and Challenges of Aging: Local Responses to Global Issues" in Albany, New York, where professionals from across the State will gather for a beneficial exchange of information and progress in this important field; and

Whereas, this occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and achievements of those responsible for the delivery of quality services for older New Yorkers and whose continued focus on improving such important resources in the future is a valuable purpose within our society;

Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim October 15-21, 2007 as Older American Service Week in the Empire State.
