Proclamation
Whereas, veterinary technicians are important members of veterinary health care teams across our country who are educated and trained in the care and handling of animals, the basic principles of normal and abnormal life processes, and in routine laboratory and clinical procedures; and
Whereas, working under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian, the veterinary technician plays a key role in the support of animal health, public health and animal welfare programs, and their involvement in companion animal medicine and care is highly beneficial to the pet owning population; and
Whereas, as licensed professionals who perform specific responsibilities under the direction of veterinarians, veterinary technicians help ensure the competent and humane treatment of the animal population in New York State - including both domestic pets and the many breeds of farm animals raised for the production of food and other products; and
Whereas, while their role within the overall field of veterinary medicine is essential to providing quality animal health care, veterinary technicians also should be acknowledged and thanked for their contributions to food safety, infectious disease control and medical research; and
Whereas, as part of a growing profession in New York State, veterinary technicians are required to maintain certification, registration or licensure through the successful completion of a national and or state examination, and they are encouraged to practice lifelong learning through continuing education and by participating in accredited programs offered throughout New York State; and
Whereas, thousands of New Yorkers know the rewards and comforts of owning a pet, or working with farm livestock or other animals, and we join to applaud veterinary technicians across the state and extend our appreciation for their contributions to the health and well being of all animals, as they do so in the highest ethical standards;
Now, Therefore, I, Eliot Spitzer, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim October 14-20, 2007 as Veterinary Technician Week in the Empire State.
G i v e n under my hand and the Privy Seal of the State at the Capitol in the City of Albany this tenth day of October in the year two thousand seven.
Eliot Spitzer, Governor
